CS 1.6 Browser Game: Counter-Strike 1.6 on WebXash

ShootersClassics

Plays right here. Runs on x8bitrain.github.io.

WebXash runs Counter-Strike 1.6 and Half-Life in your browser with a WebAssembly build of the Xash3D engine. It does not include any game data: you open the folder of your own Steam copy (with the cstrike or valve folder) and it loads from there.

How to Play CS 1.6 in Your Browser

  1. 1Find your game folder. With Steam, it is in steamapps/common/Half-Life and contains valve and cstrike.
  2. 2Press Play, then “Open game folder” and select that root folder.
  3. 3Pick cstrike from the list (this sets the -game argument), then launch.
  4. 4Allow the permission prompt if you want WebXash to remember the folder next time.

CS 1.6 Browser Game Files: What WebXash Needs

A folder or a ZIP

Select the root folder, or zip the valve and cstrike folders and use “open zip”. The zip must contain those folders at its top level.

Read-only

WebXash never writes to your folder. It copies the files into an in-memory file system for the session.

Mods and expansions

Opposing Force, Blue Shift and other mods work if they sit next to the valve folder.

Where to get the files

From your Steam installation, or with SteamCMD (app 70 for Half-Life). The site does not provide them.

CS 1.6 Browser FAQ

Can I play CS 1.6 online in the browser without downloading?

You do not install anything, but you do need the game files from your own copy. WebXash loads them from a folder or ZIP you select.

Is WebXash official Counter-Strike?

No. It is a community project using the open-source Xash3D engine, not made by Valve.

Does it play Half-Life too?

Yes. Select the valve folder instead of cstrike to play Half-Life, or a mod folder for expansions.
