How Quake III Arena Runs in the Browser
The site is powered by Q3JS, a non-commercial fan project by @lukathedev that builds the GPL-licensed ioquake3 engine for WebAssembly and WebGL. It uses the demo data id Software released for free, so you do not need the retail game.
q3.pieter.com is one public server on that engine, with a live player list and a frag leaderboard for the last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days and all time. pieter.com is the personal site of Pieter Levels (@levelsio), who calls it an online computer history museum. It is unofficial and not affiliated with id Software.
