Return to Castle Wolfenstein Browser Game (RTCW Online)

ShootersClassics

Plays right here. Runs on rtcw.pieter.com.

rtcw.pieter.com runs Return to Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer in a browser on the classic mp_beach map. It is the real RTCW multiplayer engine (iortcw) compiled to WebAssembly; the first load downloads about 380 MB, then it is cached.

What the RTCW Browser Version Is

It combines iortcw, the open-source continuation of the RTCW engine, with Wwasm, a WebAssembly build of it. That makes it the original 2001 team multiplayer (Axis versus Allies) rather than a remake.

It is non-commercial and not affiliated with id Software, Activision or Bethesda. pieter.com is the personal site of Pieter Levels (@levelsio), who calls it an online computer history museum. Note that “Wolfenstein browser” searches often mean Wolfenstein 3D (1992), a different, much older game.

How to Play RTCW Online in Your Browser

  1. 1Use desktop Chrome, which the site recommends.
  2. 2Press Play and wait for the roughly 380 MB first download; it is cached afterwards.
  3. 3Join a team and click inside the game to capture the mouse.
